Servicing

Solid, well sewn, well made, your Kanuk garment is very easy to maintain. You can even wash it at home, using cold water, if you have a front loading washing machine.

Insulated winter coats, jackets & parkas

  • Do not dry clean.
  • Your Kanuk should be washed in a front-loading washer (no agitator, door on front of machine, not on top).
  • The results produced by the newer top loading machines with no agitators are not as good as when using front loading machines. In fact, due to its design, a Kanuk with high-loft insulation will not absorb moisture and will float to the top of this type of machine instead.
  • Do not wash in hot water; do not use the hot setting on your dryer.
  • Always remove the fur trim before washing. Never wash your Kanuk fur; have it cleaned by a specialist. If the fur should get wet inadvertently, air dry it, and avoid drying it close to a heat source.
  • Never use a detergent that contains bleach. Certain stain removers can damage your coat. We recommend always testing the product beforehand on a concealed area of your coat.
  • Certain apparel protectors can stain your coat; we recommend always testing the product beforehand on a concealed area of the garment.
  • Always unzip your Kanuk and pull out the hood before washing (foldaway hoods).
  • Do not use fabric softener.
  • Before each wash, take the time to re-read this section on the Kanuk website to make sure you're using the very best laundering techniques.

Rainwear

  • Do not dry clean.
  • Always take your fur trim to a specialist.
  • Never wash the fur trim yourself.
  • Never place fur in a refrigerator or freezer; this could cause the fur to dry out and the skin to crack.
  • Protect your fur trim from friction and rubbing (e.g. repetitive rubbing against a purse strap can quickly and permanently damage your fur trim).

Fur trim

  • Do not dry clean.

  • Protect your fur trim from friction and rubbing (e.g. repetitive rubbing against a purse strap can quickly and permanently damage your fur trim).
  • Fur should never be washed in water or dry-cleaned. If you have questions about fur repair or maintenance, please consult a professional furrier.
  • Your fur trim requires little care. However, we recommend the following precautions :
  • Even though fur is resistant to snow and rain, you should try not to let it get soaked;
  • If your fur trim gets wet, shake it out as soon as possible to remove excess water;
  • Brush your fur trim from time to time to restore its volume.

Storage

  • Place your Kanuk fur carefully into a large paper bag or shoebox. Do not crush it. Store the bag or box on the top shelf of the coolest closet in the house.
  • Plastic bags and containers restrict air circulation and in doing so reduce humidity, which can draw moisture out of the skin and cause it to dry prematurely.
  • Cedar absorbs a great deal of humidity and will also contribute to drying out your fur collar.
  • Mothballs give off a fumigant gas that will rapidly damage the skin of the fur.
  • The air inside a freezer is much too dry for your fur collar and will also dry out the skin.
